bryankonietzko:

I’m sure this meme is dead by now, but it still cracks me up.

The Legend of Korra has been picked up for an additional 26 episodes, which will be split into Books 3 & 4! Mike and I had been hoping to announce this big news to the crowd at the Korra SDCC panel tomorrow morning, but the network put out a press release yesterday. And as we suspected, people are pretty confused, understandably so. Hopefully people are also excited.

I’m sure I’ll be trying to clear this up in posts for a long time to come, but I’ll lay it all out right now:

–Book 1 = 12 episodes

–Book 2 = 14 episodes

–Book 3 = 13 episodes

–Book 4 = 13 episodes

–TOTAL = 52 episodes

Why are the four books split up into those numbers of episodes, you might ask?

Initially, Nickelodeon picked up Korra as a 12-episode miniseries. Their idea was to do 12-episode arcs that were more standalone than the original Avatar series. Mike and I were cool with this idea, as we had originally wanted the seasons to be 12 episodes long instead of 20, and creatively we liked the idea of doing tighter story arcs.

The original plan was that if Nickelodeon wanted more episodes, they would order them 12 episodes at a time. But while we were in production on Book 1, Nickelodeon decided to change their season lengths from 20 episodes (like Avatar had) to the more standardized international length of 26 episodes. They liked how Book 1 was coming out and decided to round out the order to fit their new 26-episode mold, and we got a 14-episode pick-up, which became Book 2.

Then, the network wanted even more Korra, so they picked up another order of 26 episodes. Mike and I wanted to stick with the shorter “books,” so creatively we are splitting the second order of 26 into Books 3 & 4, 13 episodes each.

What makes this even more confusing is that the network considers each block of 26 episodes a “season,” which is another reason we try to stick to calling these Korra arcs “books.” So for the network’s purposes, Books 1 & 2 are Season 1, and Books 3 & 4 are Season 2.

When will Books 2, 3, and 4 come out?

Someday!

What will happen after Book 4?

Mike and I plan to wrap up the Korra storyline at that point with the close of Book 4. Then I plan to crawl into a dark cave and go into hibernation. And hopefully see my wife more often.

I hope that clears it up. SEE YOU IN SAN DIEGO! If you can’t make the panel and Nick booth signing tomorrow, we’ll be signing at the Dark Horse booth on Saturday, I *think* at 2:30 (but I’m not sure). If you are going to SDCC, please be safe! You probably already heard, but tragically a convention attendee died in an accident on Tuesday morning. Take care.

Hey, I’ve been at Comic Con. But this is true and I imagine it will be one of the first things we hear on the panel Friday (BTW - I’m (Da7e) is going to be live-blogging that panel at CINEMABLEND.COM - I’ll link you)

The word has come from an Entertainment Weekly exclusive:

LEGEND OF KORRA CONFIRMED FOR MORE EPISODES AFTER BOOK 2!

Dan Snierson, author of the EW articleconfirms to us via Twitter that Nick has ordered 26 episodes to air AFTER the “original 26-episode order.” “This new 26-ep order is for “Season 2,” he tells us after saying “”Season 1, Book 2” airs in 2013, part of the original 26-episode order.” Take these together and some form of 26 new episodes after book 2 has been confirmed! They could either have a 26 episode Book 3, or spread the 26 episodes into Books 3 and 4.

Hopefully they can redeem themselves with this many episodes. No more excuses. I just hope they don’t keep going and going just cause it’s popular. I’d rather have a story that ends well than a show that outstays its welcome.

AWESOME. More episodes yip yip.

Reposting this picture because it gives me Makorra feels.

Bryan released this on his tumblr I think some months ago. It’s apparently pieces of a storyboard scene from season two. Meaning, we’re deliberately missing some shots so we don’t know what’s going on. And it’s our only glimpse into season two thus far. Aside from the fact that the book is apparently called “Spirits”—which I think has become a verified fact in the last few days, though I’m being lazy and not double checking the source.

But anyway it shows Korra and Mako (and Naga?) in either the North or South Pole. Mako’s outfit has been revised to hold a fluffy hood, like Korra’s winter garb. So they’ve probably been in the cold climate for a while now. I remember reading an interview where Brychael said that season two would take place half in Republic City and the other half elsewhere, though they remained vague about it. This is probably one of the elsewhere places.

If you look at the timecodes at the bottoms of the pictures; in the second picture the time is 00:12:56:00. So that’s about 13 minutes into the episode. In the picture below that the time is 00:14:40:00, so almost two minutes have gone by between the two images. In the bottom one, Korra is in some new location where it’s heavily snowing.

So now, My Makorra feels. Mako looks concerned. Korra looks upset. What is going on? We know from the end of season one that these two are probably definitely in a relationship now. And if they’re not for some reason, they at least love each other and know this. It looks to me like Korra is taking off to go somewhere on her own. Maybe Mako’s worried?

Basically, I just want to see this episode now please. But I know I need to wait. I respect the amount of work it takes to make an episode. Like I said before, this storyboard was posted months ago.

I wonder what Mako looks like in Water Tribe clothes! I seriously cannot wait for season 2!!

It seems that way since that worried look on Mako’s face shows it. I believe Korra will go on a solo mission again, but I doubt Mako won’t protest to it with what happened to her before. That’s probably why she looks frustrated in the second panel. I’m guessing they’re arguing while she prepares Naga?

Makorra feels. That is all.
